About Him
Hassan was the special one. Out of ten mares Reveille bred in 2007, ten mares caught, and only three purebred colts were born, which for Reveille, being a filly producer was a good thing. Hassan was black, with no white except a tiny half sock on his hind. Matty knew the color was a kickback of Reveille's ebony grand dam, and she immediately fell in love with the colt. He was humble beyond belief, and quiet, yet he always seemed to be smiling; carefree and happy. He could put on a show if really jazzed up, but he was so good minded that it look a lot to get him pumped. The thing that made Hassan stand out so much was his movement. He wasn't upright enough to be a Country horse, not hot enough to be a Costume horse, but his movement was smooth, rolling, and he could easily arch his neck and hold it in the loose beautiful Hunter headset while he picked up his knees and TROT. Even with his calm nature, his movement and exotic face will get him notice in the Halter ring. As hard as Matty tried, no name fit the colt. Matty had named numerous horses, not just Godolphin bred horses, but others as well. Yet, no matter how hard she tried to come up with a name, the black colt was just called the 'black colt'. Unlike his hot, fiery sisters who carried that self-importance and confidence that would some day sweep the halter ring, the black colt wouldn't show off or put on a show unless forced to. When GS Jakarta was born, the spitfire, full of jazz and spark, mischief and trouble, much like Oreille, the third colt bred by Western Ridge, Hassan's meak personalty paled in comparision. It wasn't until five months later, after the colt had been weaned, that the name came, and at a terrible price.
Xenophon, the beginning of ill-tempered horses, escaped early that December morning. It was the first time Matty had ever let anyone take Xenophon anywhere without her, and the Thoroughbred easily evaded the five grooms set out to transport him to a new holding paddock. The black hellion of Fail Scene Stables quickly scanned the surrounding area once free, and as people ran yelling for help, his vengeful eyes fell on the weanling colt who was in his pasture, innocent, his muzzle barely moving as he plucked a few blades of grass in his small teeth and chewed them. He didn't even see it coming, as Xenophon headed straight for him and easily cleared the fence, smashing into the colt and throwing him to the ground, before grabbing him by his right nostril with his maw. The colt kicked and flailed, his terrified screams filling the crisp winter air as he tried to escape, Xenophon's eyes alight with the game.
It took Matty a few breif seconds to grab the tranq gun and run sprinting out of the stables. She aimed, fired, and Xenophon fell with a heavy thud to the frost-covered ground.
Tears soaked in the grass, mixed with blood as she supported the colt's head, the vet already on his way. Luckily only his right nostril had been torn from the edge clear down to his lip. The torn skin flipped back, it didn't even look like a muzzle at that point. After the wound had been stitched and healed, there was still a jagged scar, and what looked like a small harelip. The name came easily then. 'Hassan' Matty muttered as she put down her book. She had just finished reading The Kite Runner, and in that instant she knew the happy colt who was now so withdrawn after the attack, would be called Hassan. Matty decided not to sell him, and although he might not look or act like the stallion he was supposed to become, he has heart and the most forgiving eyes. It will take awhile before he ever gets over what happened to him, but Matty is determined and sure she can make him whole again.
